How do I find the data source for a specific indicator?
The data definition and source information can be found at the bottom of any indicator report. If you are on a State Profile page, you will have to select
Show under
Notes/Sources (see below) to view information for indicators displayed on the page.
I just accessed the profile page for my state and did not find data I was looking for. Does this mean that data are not available on the site?
In some cases it means that data are not available. But this is not the case always. When you access the profile page for your geography of interest it defaults to display the Featured indicators selected by the state KIDS COUNT organization. If you want to see most of the data on the Data Center, select
All Indicators under
Indicators.
How do I rank states, counties, school district or states?
Once you select an indicator of interest (e.g. child poverty), you will reach a report page, select
123 Ranking tab. Go to
Sort order/by and select
Numerical by Value from the dropdown menu provided.
How can I determine how my state ranks on overall child well-being?
The KIDS COUNT Overall Rank provides you with insight into how your state ranks among other states based on 16 key indicators. These data can be accessed by selecting
Data Across States, going to
National KIDS COUNT Index Data and selecting
KIDS COUNT Overall Rank. Pick
Numerical by Value from the dropdown menu under
Sort order/by at the top of the page.
The Overall Rank for my state is informative, but it masks how we are performing in different areas. Is it possible to rank my state in the area of economic well-being, education, health, and family and community?
The new KIDS COUNT index incorporates four content domains that capture what children need most to thrive: (1) Economic well-being, (2) Education, (3) Health and (4) Family and Community. Each of the four domains is comprised by four indicators that are used to measure how children are faring in each area. In addition to the Overall Rank, KIDS COUNT now provides rankings in the four areas mentioned above. They can be accessed in the Data Across States section of the site under
National KIDS COUNT Index Data.
What happened to the 10 key indicators tracked by the KIDS COUNT Data Book?
All of the 10 key indicators continue to be collected and can be found in the Data Across States section of the site. Six of the original 10 indicators remain unchanged in the new KIDS COUNT index, the child and teen death rates were combined into one indicator, infant mortality was deleted because it was highly correlated with the percent of low birthweight babies indicator, and the percent of teens not in school and not high school graduates was replaced with teen not graduating high school ontime. In addition to these changes, eight new indicators were added to the new KIDS COUNT index.
The diversification of the indicators and the incorporation of domains provides a more complete picture of how children are faring overall and in key areas that impact their well-being.
How do I share data on social networking sites, blogs and other online venues?
Once an indicator of interest has been selected, you will be taken to that indicator's report page. You will have the option of mapping or graphing your indicator by selecting the
Map or
Line Graph tab. Once the decision is made, select
Share. Options to share information through social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Blogger) will be provided. Select avenue of interest and share content with friends.
I want to upload a map or graph onto my website. How do I do this?
First you will have to select an indicator. Once an indicator is selected, a report will be created for the indicator. You will have to select the
Map or
Line Graph tab depending on what you are interested in creating and sharing. Once you have created the image you want to upload on your website, select
Add Image to Your Site. You will be provided with a piece of HTML code that can be embedded onto your site.
